In the beginning...
Participants in the first Colorado (L-R):
Sherm Cooper, Dick Singer, Lon Bromley, Wally Dallenbach, Art Lamey, Del Garner, Al Unser, Ed Kretz, Bobby Unser
...There was a ride
When Wally Dallenbach started the Colorado 500 back in 1975, he had no way of knowing how many people his ride would touch. Wally intended for the ride to be a challenge to participants and also an opportunity to raise awareness and support for trails preservation, to support area youth, and fund other important community organizations.
He succeeded mightily on both counts! To date, over 80 scholarships (totaling more than $600,000) have been awarded and more than $2,000,000 has been distributed to community organizations, shelters, and trail projects.
2018 brings the 43rd annual Dirt Ride and the 32nd annual Road Ride. A lot has changed since 1975, but Wally and the Colorado 500 have changed with the times and our riders are true “trail ambassadors.”
It’s all of these things that make the Colorado 500 a great event and a class act. A ride with heart.
